California Needs Good Drug Rehabs

12/11/2009

There are many issues that affect the drug situation in California. The diverse culture and unique geography play a major role in trafficking and distribution of a variety of drugs throughout the state. Mexican trafficking organizations, working closely with Colombian suppliers dominate the wholesale cocaine trade and much of the black and brown tar heroin and methamphetamine trade. West African and Southeast Asian nationals are also involved in the distribution and transportation of Asian heroin. MDMA is widely available throughout the state and is supplied by Asian drug trafficking organizations. According to the Drug Enforcement Administration, there were 8,508.5 kilograms of cocaine, 377.6 kilograms of heroin, 2,236.2 kilograms of methamphetamine, 187,627.1 kilograms of marijuana, 25.9 kilograms of hashish and 7.6 kilograms of MDMA seized by the federal government in 2008. There were also 346 meth lab incidents reported. Due to the discrepancy in national laws between the U.S. and Mexico, Mexican border pharmacies continue to be a major source of controlled substances and illicit pharmaceuticals smuggled into southern California and a serious problem for citizens of the state. It is obvious that California residents need drug rehab now.

The drug and alcohol problem in the state of California continues to destroy families and entire communities and only seems to be getting worse. According to the California Department of Corrections, as of February 20, 2008, the institutional offender population in California was 173,274. Approximately 21% of the offenders at that time had committed drug offenses. The California parole population was 127,015 and approximately 31% of the parolees had committed drug offenses. According to National Survey of Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) data, approximately 849,000 California citizens reported needing but not receiving treatment for illicit drug use within the past year. One of the main reasons for this is because residents haven't been able to find a successful and effective drug rehab. Most have given up hope that they can be helped and can recover from their addictions. It is clearly evident that the drug situation in California is out of control and many citizens need drug rehab now.
