News ReleasesMarijuana Destroying Many Lives11/05/2009 Marijuana remains the most widely abused illegal substance in Kansas. Marijuana plants are cultivated by law enforcement all over the state and still, there is major use in Kansas. Schools and other organizations are plagued with this substance and for many it seems like an endless cycle. In Kansas, marijuana is grown and sold in the streets, grocery stores, malls, and schools among many other places. Marijuana can be grown in closely controlled conditions increasing its potency. This type of marijuana is called "hydro," short for hydroponic marijuana. "Hydro" is in strong demand due to its higher potency and commands a much higher price than most marijuana. While the problem continues to rise and beliefs change from day to day, approximately 832,000 Kansas citizens reported that using marijuana occasionally was a "great risk", reported from the ONDCP (Office National Drug Control Policy). According to the 2008 Communities That Care survey, 16.2% of Kansas students reported using marijuana at least once within their lifetime. Additional survey results indicated 4.1% of high school students had sold illegal drugs within the past year. Statistics show that students who use or abuse marijuana have a higher tendency to do worse in school and some drop out all together. Marijuana is prevalent throughout the state of Kansas. There were 717 marijuana plants eradicated from January 1 to May 31, 2008 with over 40 federal sentencing drug cases. With over 4,000 admissions to treatment centers in Kansas for marijuana, we can see that there is a huge problem.
