Opiate Addiction: Can a person recover?
When we speak about opiate addiction we are generally speaking about the addiction to drugs like Heroin, Morphine, Vicodin, Oxycontin, Percocet and a whole variety of other prescription drugs. They are all based on or offer as the primary active ingredients a derivative of opium or a morphine like drug.
Opiate addiction is an extremely hard addiction to battle. Not only do you have the severe physical and emotional addictions including bio-physically triggered cravings and environmentally triggered cravings as well, you also have to deal with the physical dependence issues associated with the withdraw from an opiate drug itself. A person withdrawing from an opiate based drug may experience days or even weeks of severe nausea, cramping, and other severe flue like symptoms. Unfortunately if the person uses the drug again it will almost instantly “fix” the problem by the symptoms disappearing until that dosage begins to wear off. This makes it incredibly difficult for a person to just take themselves off the drug “cold turkey” or all at once. Further, there are medical risks associated with the withdrawal from opiate type drugs up to and including death dependant on a variety of health related circumstances. This is why a medical professional should always play a major role in the sudden withdrawal from these type drugs, especially when large quantities are used frequently.
