Meth-laced Ecstasy
Experts say a potent and dangerous new drug has begun to make its way on the illegal drug market. Drug producers are now combining methamphetamine with ecstasy, according to information from the White House Office.
The meth-laced ecstasy will produce greater adverse neurochemical and behavioral effects than either drug alone.
This new spin on ecstasy, a popular drug during the “Rave” era of the early 90s, is bringing popularity back to the drug. It is beginning to make a splash back East and in states such as Wisconsin, Illinois, Tennessee and Michigan.
More than 55 percent of the ecstasy samples seized in the United States last year contained methamphetamine. Cutting their product with less-expensive methamphetamine boosts profits for ecstasy producers, and increases the addictive potential of their product, effectively giving a dangerous “face lift” to a designer drug that had fallen out of fashion with young American drug users.
Between the years 2005 and 2006, there was a 40 percent increase in the number of people in the U.S. who reported that they tried ecstasy for the first time during the past year. One-third of these new users in 2006 were under age 18 when they started using ecstasy, data stated.
A national law enforcement Web site estimated that ecstasy tablets can be found and sold for between $15 and $20 per tablet.
