Cocaine
A drug is a sometimes addictive substance that causes changes in behavior and perception and is taken for the effects. There are 2 main types of drugs, stimulants, which temporarily speed up one or more processes in the body, and depressants, which for a short time slow down one or more processes in the body.
Cocaine is a stimulant. More precisely, cocaine is the strongest naturally produced stimulant on earth. It can be snorted, smoked or injected. When inhaled through the nose, cocaine passes through the nasal tissues and is absorbed into the bloodstream. Cocaine can be smoked whereby the vapor or smoke is inhaled into the lungs where it is absorbed into the bloodstream. Finally, cocaine can be injected directly into the bloodstream by way of a needle.
Using cocaine can be very harmful. The effects can include constricted blood vessels and increased temperature, heart rate and blood pressure. Additionally, feelings of restlessness, irritability and anxiety may be experienced by cocaine users. Users who inject cocaine using shared needles risk transmitting or being infected with communicable diseases, including AIDS.
