Methamphetamine - Drug Rehab

12/30/2007

Drugs are chemical substances that affect the central nervous system, causing changes in behavior and often addiction. The problem of drugs is no longer just an issue of the inner city. In the Midwest, states including Illinois, Indiana and Ohio, are facing an alarming increase in drug use; in particular the use of methamphetamine.

Methamphetamine is a drug that is farther classified as a stimulant. In general, a stimulant is a substance that temporarily increases a process. Specifically, meth users experience a brief but intense "rush" when the drug is first taken. The instant effects of meth include increased physical activity and decreased appetite. Methamphetamine can be taken many ways, which is another factor in its increased use.

Meth can be snorted, smoked, taken orally and even injected. In Knox County, Indiana, the percentage of court cases related to meth has gone from 36% in 2000 to 77% in 2004, over a 100% increase in just 4 years. The number of meth cases is contributing to the counties need to build a new jail at significant cost to taxpayers.

Unfortunately, putting drug abusers in jail does not handle the problem for the person afflicted with addiction. A better approach is to effectively handle the person through a stop addiction program.
