The drug, methamphetamine is also one of the most serious drug threats in West Virginia. The production of methamphetamine, through meth laboratories in the state has increased dramatically over the last years.

The demand for MDMA, or ecstasy in West Virginia has increased, although its abuse remains concentrated near the location of West Virginia University. Because of the state's many rural areas there are many "rave" parties; all night parties where club drugs such as ecstasy are commonly used.

The abuse of prescriptions is currently the most serious drug threat in West Virginia. Current reports show that the abuse of hydrocodone products and diazepam continues to be a major problem in the state.

The National Survey on Drug Use and Health reports that in 2003-2004 approximately 113,000 people in West Virginia aged 12 or older reported past month use of an illicit drug.
