South Dakota Drug Rehab

There were 13,360 admissions to drug/alcohol rehab in South Dakota during 2005. In 2004 there were 9, 380 admissions to drug treatment during 2004. There were 9,116 admissions into drug treatment in 2003.

A national study reports that in 2003-2004 approximately 14,000 or 2.23% of South Dakota citizens reported needing but not receiving drug treatment for illicit drug use over the last year.

The drug situation in South Dakota is as grim as any other state, showing a clear-cut need for drug rehabilitation programs that can help.

Cocaine, in powder form is readily available in all parts of South Dakota. The availability of crack cocaine is increasing in the eastern part of the state, and abuse is limited in western sections of South Dakota.

Heroin is available in smaller quantities, such as personal use quantities in South Dakota.

Methampheamine is readily available in South Dakota as the abuse of Mexican methamphetamine continues to increase throughout the state. Methamphetamine in eastern South Dakota is obtained from sources in Sioux City, Iowa, as well as from sources in the western states such as Texas, Arizona, and California.

Marijuana is available all throughout the state of South Dakota and at high purity levels.

MDMA or ecstasy is available in South Dakota and the abuse of this drug is starting to increase. Previously, ecstasy had been limited in the state but now MDMA is more readily available in western portions of South Dakota.

Currently hydrocodone products, codeine, and Darvocet are the most popular abused pharmaceutical substances in South Dakota. These drugs are obtained by forged or fake prescriptions and by doctor shopping. The abuse of OxyContin is a growing problem throughout South Dakota.

Further, a national study done in 2003-2004 indicates that approximately 44,000 or 7% of South Dakota citizens over 12 reported past month use of an illicit drug.
