Marijuana is available all throughout the state of South Dakota and at high purity levels.

MDMA or ecstasy is available in South Dakota and the abuse of this drug is starting to increase. Previously, ecstasy had been limited in the state but now MDMA is more readily available in western portions of South Dakota.

Currently hydrocodone products, codeine, and Darvocet are the most popular abused pharmaceutical substances in South Dakota. These drugs are obtained by forged or fake prescriptions and by doctor shopping. The abuse of OxyContin is a growing problem throughout South Dakota.

Further, a national study done in 2003-2004 indicates that approximately 44,000 or 7% of South Dakota citizens over 12 reported past month use of an illicit drug.
