Ontario Drug Rehab

Survey findings indicate that cocaine is ranked as the third most widely-used drug in Ontario and the rest of Canada, after marijuana and hallucinogens, in the overall need for drug rehab programs for people in the province. The lifetime rates increased significantly within a decade from less than 4% in 1994 to more than 10% in 2004. As for people from Ontario reporting cocaine use in 2004, rates also increased to 1.9% from 0.7% in 1994.

Less than one percent of people from Ontario aged 15 years or older acknowledged having ever tried or used heroin during their lifetime.

Nearly 45% of people in Ontario, Canada reported using marijuana at least once in their lifetime, and just over 14% reported use during the 12 month period prior to the survey. Just over 47% of 18 and 19 year olds confirmed marijuana use within the past year.

The Ontario Student Drug Use and Health Survey (OSDUHS) reports that 4.5% of students reported past year use of ecstasy in 2005, which was up from 4.1% reported in 2003.

Comparatively, the 2005 Ontario survey showed a decline in past year usage of methamphetamine from 3.3% in 2003 to 2.2% in 2005, but "hard core" cocaine users are reportedly switching to methamphetamine due to its increased street popularity.
